AXIS was born in the aftermath of the September 11 tragedy, when our founders, President and CEO John Charman and Chairman Robert J. Newhouse Jr. answered a clear need in the market for specialized products during a time of global uncertainty. AXIS was created in response to the significant market dislocation of 2001 that reshaped global insurance and reinsurance markets.

From a small team in Bermuda came a belief that an increasingly volatile world had created a market need for specialized insurance solutions, written by underwriters with deep expertise in their markets and underpinned by a foundation of exceptional customer service. The team operated out of a modest office at 92 Pitts Bay Road in Hamilton, Bermuda.

At a time when specialty capacity was scarce, AXIS was built to help meet that need. On November 20, 2001, AXIS Specialty Limited launched in Bermuda with $1.686 billion in capital from leading investors and a proven management and underwriting team.

Twenty-five years later, that belief still guides AXIS. What began as a start-up launched by a small team of underwriters is now a global specialty insurer and reinsurer, shaped by the people, the moments, and the milestones that made us.

THE NAME AND THE MARK

The story behind the name AXIS and the mark it inspired

AXIS

One of the more enduring AXIS stories is that John Charman, founding President and CEO, chose the name while leafing through a dictionary in his conservatory. At the end of the A’s, he found AXIS. The name was thought to capture ideas of balance and movement, reflecting the role insurance plays in keeping businesses, and the world around them, moving forward. Twenty-five years on, the name still fits, and so does the belief behind it.

The Mark

The name and the logo are intrinsically linked. The original AXIS logo brought the meaning of the name to life: balance, progress, and the sense of a world in motion.

In 2019, as the industry and the wider world transformed, AXIS refreshed the logo to reflect a more modern identity, a refinement rather than a departure, designed to signal a company moving forward and unlocking its potential.

2001
Founded by President and CEO John Charman and Chairman Robert Newhouse AXIS Specialty Limited launches in Bermuda on November 20 with $1.686 billion in capital from leading investors, including Director, Chuck Davis.
2002
Michael Butt appointed as Chairman. In its first full year, AXIS writes $1.1 billion in premiums and delivers $265.1 million in net income.
2003
AXIS begins trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker AXS.
2004
In the first record catastrophe year since inception, AXIS reports net income of $495 million.
2012
Albert Benchimol appointed President and CEO.
2014
AXIS receives Lloyd’s approval for Syndicate 1686, a deliberate nod to the founding capital of $1.686 billion.
2016
Launches Harrington Re in partnership with Blackstone.
2017
AXIS acquires Novae to expand its international business and deepen its presence at Lloyd’s.
2020
Henry B. Smith appointed Chair, succeeding Michael Butt. As COVID-19 disrupts the world, AXIS transitions to virtual operations without disruption to customers and commits $1 million to relief.
2023
Vince Tizzio becomes President and CEO. Over the next three years, AXIS experiences an incredible turnaround highlighted by total shareholder return of more than 100%, repeated alltime highs in the Company’s stock, record setting growth, and consistent profitable results.
2024
W. Marston “Marty” Becker appointed Chairman, succeeding Henry B. Smith. AXIS reaches $32.5 billion in total assets and $7.4 billion in total capital, with ratings of A.M. Best A and S&P A+. At the Company’s Investor Day on May, 30 2024, Marty Becker and Vince Tizzio unveiled a bold ambition for AXIS, to become the “leading specialty underwriter” in the profession with a set of transparent success guidepost.
2025
Total assets reach $34.5 billion, with nearly 2,000 teammates worldwide and ratings of A.M. Best A and S&P A+.
2026
AXIS marks 25 years since its founding celebrating a quarter-century of speciality underwriting, resilience and growth.

After 9/11, the global economy faced deep uncertainty. Aviation, Property, financial services and other sectors were navigating heightened risk. It created demand for new capacity and more innovative insurance solutions.

AXIS was formed in November 2001 and Rory joined in January 2002, working with the founding CEO of AXIS John Charman. The pace was relentless, but it was a memorable and exciting time.

A small team of underwriters drove that momentum, working across London and Bermuda. The team met brokers and customers in London and spent the midweek days in Bermuda reviewing submissions and binding business. That rhythm kept them close to brokers and customers alike, building relationships that would endure through market cycles. "Our capacity was valued across multiple product lines, but we made the biggest impact where the demand was most acute, in Terrorism and Aviation."

Within a year, the team had built a significant portfolio across specialist risks. But it was never just about volume.

“There was a real sense of purpose,” Rory says. “We knew what we were building mattered, for the long term.”

At its core, AXIS was built to provide re/insurance stability in moments of disruption, and confidence in the face of uncertainty. That is the foundation of 25 years of specialty solutions, elevated, and it remains as relevant today as it was at the start.

Many of the customers who placed their trust in AXIS in those early days are still with us, and while the business has grown and evolved, that commitment to standing with our customers when it matters most has never changed.

When I reflect on twenty-five years of AXIS, I think first of our people, and of the brokers and insureds who have trusted us since the beginning.

The belief that created AXIS still drives us: that an ever-changing world needs specialty solutions crafted by underwriters with deep expertise and delivered with exceptional service. That belief and that discipline have taken us from a small team in Bermuda to a global specialty insurer and reinsurer.

In this world where relentless change is the norm, we covet the trust we have earned and will endeavor to realize our ambition of being the best specialty underwriter in the world while living our values of people, excellence, decisiveness, and being stronger together.
